SHOW NOTES
KEY IDEAS:
Have you been to Alaska? If not, you should make sure that this happens in your life. This is one of the most wild and open places in the world, and definitely the most wild in the United States. Alaska is heaven for the independent person. From being able to subsistence fish to getting away from people, Alaska has what the independent person wants.
Michael Irving is one of those people. He has always gone his own way, and that has never been more true than right now. Michael has started “Alaska’s Best Shellfish” near Whittier, Alaska. He is implementing new grow technology and farming oysters in our largest state.
Michael loves being on his farm, and really that is all he wants to do. However, he describes what is the equivalent to an inexhaustible demand for oysters right now and knows that his business should grow. So, he is getting active off of the farm, growing the business. He is bringing in investors, getting help from entrepreneurship groups and hiring employees.
What Michael is doing is so far out of the box that I was very excited to bring this to you. He lives on a boat, stays in Alaska and grows oysters. He is a great inspiration for any of us who have a lifestyle in mind, and the willingness to go find it!
ADVICE FROM MICHAEL:
HOMEWORK: Make sure you do your homework before jumping into a new venture like Michael’s. There is a lot to know and you have to have some idea of if you will be able to make it.
SETBACKS: Expect setbacks to come. If you know they will happen you will be prepared mentally and financially when it does happen.
QUIT: Don’t do this! When it gets tough, don’t quit. You could just be a few steps away from success!
PERSONAL HABIT:
Michael has a regular morning routine, and he uses this time to plan out his day. This really helps him to accomplish a lot.
BOOK RECOMMENDATION:
For a great book about this type of farming Michael recommends Shucked: Life on a New England Oyster Farm .
