SHOW NOTES
STATE OF THE FARM EPISODE!
At the end of last week Hattie and I made the trip to Leavenworth, Washington for a conference about our family heritage. Autumm could not get the time off and stayed home to take care of the farm.

The conference was put on by Fairfield University’s Volga German Institute. It was extremely well done!
Hattie and I are descended from Germans who emigrated to Russia in the mid-1700’s through my mother’s side of the family. More specifically, our ancestors emigrated to the Volga River Region of Russia to open up that frontier for Catherine The Great.
It was very interesting to hear how we all became farmers. Essentially, when you reached Russia and were being assigned your duties in your new village your options were farmer or jail….people chose farming. I was also able to confirm that my great, great grandfather’s story of jumping on the back of a sleeping camel and going for a wild ride was likely very true!

And, I also found out that the Volga River Region of Russia looks very much like Kansas and Nebraska…tune in to find out why!
More Updates:
There are even more updates for you on this podcast. I hope you enjoy this version and my attempts to share more with you about our farm!

Donate to FFA – One way that FFA students are able to start small businesses is through an FFA grant of $1,000. In 2014, 141 FFA students received these grants. With your donations, more students can get this head start – pay it forward.
REASONS TO DONATE TO FFA:
- Only 2% of Americans grow and raise most of the food and livestock consumed by the other 98% as well as the rest of the world. FFA is providing the needed education, training and resources to Americans that will carry that torch forward and insure that America continues to have inexpensive, quality food.
- Rural Communities will rely on entrepreneurship in the future for population growth and job creation. The FFA is a major catalyst to that entrepreneurial growth.
- Farmers, ranchers and those working in agriculture give the rest of America incredible amounts of freedom because the search for food is as simple as going to the grocery store:
“The future of American agriculture depends on the involvement and investment in America’s youth, In order to prepare for the population of tomorrow, we need to encourage America’s youth today, and show that careers in agriculture are profitable, rewarding, and vital.”.
U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Sonny Perdue
