SHOW NOTES
KEY IDEAS:
If you go back far enough into the episodes of this show you will find me talking about what I consider to be a true livestock farmer. I have talked about this many times because of the paradox of loving your livestock but then butchering them for meat. I have always defined a “true livestock farmer” as a person who can love their livestock, provide them the best life possible but still understand what their purpose is.
Today’s guest has a very similar view on livestock, and he refers to it as the agreement or the deal we have with animals. We treat them well, harvest them with respect and then get meat from them. Dan Profitt has a clear understanding of the relationship between farmers, butchers and livestock. This philosophy has led him into a growing business as a mobile butcher.
Dan started his meat cutting career when he was just in high school. Eventually it took him to the City of Boston with Whole Foods. He took years to master his craft, and then he gave up the city and moved to a more rural area of New England.
As more and more people found out that he had the meat cutting experience, more and more people started requesting his help and training in butchering their livestock. Soon thereafter, Butcher Pete’s Mobile Meat was born.
Dan has an awesome name for his business, and I had to know where it came from. It is an entertaining answer, and I am going to make you listen to the episode to find it out. With that said, the way Dan went about naming his business is very similar to how he designed it. It matches his philosophy on things perfectly.
ADVICE FROM DAN:
EXPERIENCE FIRST: Dan strongly suggests getting experience first. He says that if you do not have a high level of experience cutting meat, your customers will see it…right away.
WEAK: When it comes to applying to apprenticeships as a butcher, which is competitive, Dan says that the weaker butchers or people with weaker work ethics will be weeded out. He suggests a strong work ethic and a competitive attitude.
BRING COFFEE: I asked Dan what the key to getting an apprenticeship was. He answered to show up early and bring coffee. He was using this for a metaphor for making sure that you are demonstrating a deep commitment to getting the apprenticeship.
BEST BUSINESS ADVICE DAN HAS EVER RECEIVED:
“Take Care Of The Pennies And The Pounds Will Take Of Themselves” – pay attention to the details
RESOURCE RECOMMENDATION:
Dan strongly recommends the book Butchering Poultry, Rabbit, Lamb, Goat, and Pork: The Comprehensive Photographic Guide to Humane Slaughtering and Butchering as a precursor to getting started butchering your own livestock.
Regarding business Dan recommends the book The Richest Man in Babylon . This is a classic that I listen to each year, and I recommend it as well.
