SHOW NOTES
KEY IDEAS:
There are a lot of creative businesses that allow you to work in agriculture and to pay for equipment that you need for your farm. As a matter of fact, one of the principle reasons we suggest entrepreneurship as a way to fund your farm is because the equipment you purchase that would otherwise be sitting idle can be making money for you.
Today’s guest epitomizes this very concept. Robert Bernard and his wife live on a piece of property in East Texas and have horses plus a few cattle. After a career in the Navy and stint of employment in the air conditioning industry, Robert decided that he wanted to be more independent.
Robert had purchased a horse trailer to haul their horses to and from the veterinarian’s office because the expense of having the vet come to their place was so high. He decided to start a business with this trailer, rather than to just have it sit when none of their horses needed to be hauled anywhere.
Robert paid to have signs painted on his trailer and his pickup advertising his new livestock hauling business. His wife, who is a professional artists, created a great logo for him. And then he put an ad on Craigslist. His business was born.
Now Robert stays busy hauling livestock, horses and hay for other people who are in the position that he used to be. He is cognizant of the need to keep a clean trailer to prevent disease transmission, and has multiple different ways of charging his customers.
ADVICE FROM ROBERT:
MARKET: Learn to market yourself. You are your best advertisement.
TALK: Talking to people is essential. Figure out how to do this well.
PATIENCE: Don’t be in a hurry, especially when loading other people’s livestock.
RESPECT: Treat all livestock with the respect that you would treat your own with.
BEST BUSINESS ADVICE ROBERT HAS EVER RECEIVED:
“Be Your Customer’s Friend”: If you treat people like your friend rather than just the person who is giving you money, you develop strong business relationships.
PERSONAL HABIT:
After 24 years in the military Robert laughed and said that he is always on-time and dependable.
