SHOW NOTES
KEY IDEAS:
There is a key strategy to producing income as an entrepreneur that you see mostly in the world of intellectual property. That strategy is to repurpose your content so you can sell it in multiple different forms, and your customers can consume your content in the manner that suits them best.
Our guest today, Jax Taylor, has figured out how to do this with goats. Jax has purchased a franchise business called "Rent A Ruminant". When companies, such as Costco, need weeds removed in her service area, they call her. This could either be a value based decision on the part of the customer or because traditional equipment will not work in the area that needs to be cleared.
This is a great business that requires a significant amount of Jax's attention and time. However, it is not always in demand. Also, Jax's goats have kids every year, and they detract from her ability to control the goats with electric netting when she has weed removal jobs.
So, to repurpose the kids Jax started holding goat yoga sessions. She wanted control of the business, so instead of contracting her goats to a yoga instructor, she hires the yoga instructor for her own studio. Jax rented her own studio space, does the marketing for the yoga classes, takes care of the insurance and designs the program. Then she hires a yoga instructor to come in and teach the class. Simply Brilliant!
ADVICE FROM JAX:
START: A common and time tested piece of advice. If you have an idea, just start! It doesn't mean you have to sacrifice your life savings, but get started and see where it takes you. Just do it wisely.
PRICE: Do not undersell yourself. Jax says the tendency for new entrepreneurs is to price their products of services too low hoping that will attract customers. Jax warns against doing this. She states that you are selling a product or service with high value as an entrepreneur, and you need to price in such a manner that your business is sustainable.
BEST BUSINESS ADVICE JAX HAS RECEIVED:
WORK ETHIC: Jax is retired from the Army, and she suggests maintaining the same, mission focused work ethic you are taught in the military. If you have never served in the military, there are plenty of books that can teach you about this type of ethic and leadership.
PERSONAL HABIT THAT HELPS JAX SUCCEED:
EARLY: Jax channels Benjamin Franklin for this one - "early to bed and early to wise makes you health wealthy and wise". Jax says she has always prided herself on getting to bed early and being up and going before most other people.
BOOKS/RESOURCES:
Jax recommends taking advantage of groups that provide leadership and mentoring to new entrepreneurs like SCORE.
