SHOW NOTES
KEY IDEAS:
Our guest today started his entrepreneurship journey in the FFA with his supervised agricultural experience. This was well over ten years ago. Today he is 30, is married with children and is still growing the seed of the idea that was planted in high school.
Matt Vlasin operates Holiday Farms in Imperial, Nebraska. When he was in high school he lived out on a farm with his parents and brothers. For their FFA project, he and his brother got a greenhouse and started growing plants. Eventually, the family moved into town, the brothers moved on and Matt kept at it with the help of his mother.
Today Matt is still operating his green house, selling plants, providing landscaping services and providing lawn care services. Matt is also selling Christmas trees to his town of 2,000 people. He really enjoys that part of his business because he gets to make it an event and provide the personal touch to his customers that they want during Christmas. Matt says that the only other options to purchase a tree in his area are at grocery stores.
Matt buys his trees from a wholesaler in Denver, and has to drive the 420 mile round trip to pick them up. He has a dream of planting his own Christmas trees and developing a cut your own lot in his hometown.
Matt says that he loves his business when it gets crazy and is moving a million miles an hour. If he keeps being this innovative, I don’t think he will ever have a problem keeping those times going.
ADVICE FROM MATT:
PERSISTENCE: This really says it all for Matt. He started this business because he needed a project in high school, and he has stuck with it. Now he is one of the premier entrepreneurs in his community.
PLAN: Matt highly suggests having a plan. Know where you are going or you will never make it to your destination.
WANT: What do you want? You had better know, or how will you ever get it?
GOALS: Set them…..enough said.
BEST BUSINESS ADVICE MATT HAS EVER RECEIVED:
NEVER GIVE UP!
PERSONAL HABIT:
PHOTOGRAPHY: No, Matt is not into photography. He has a photographic memory. He is able to remember faces, names, yards, etc. and it helps him excel in his customer service.
RESOURCE RECOMMENDATIONS:
Matt didn’t have any books to recommend. However, he strongly recommends allying with local business owners, and getting to know how they are interacting with customers in your community.
