SHOW NOTES
INTRODUCING ALICIA GREER!
There is a recurring issue that I run across frequently due to my interest in the FFA. That issue is how can home schooled students participate in the FFA?
So often students who are home schooled are also living in a rural environment, on a very remote farm or on a homestead. So, the interest in the FFA is a natural fit. Our guest today actually does have an agricultural background, but that did not stop her from developing a strong interest in the FFA.
Alicia Greer lives on a golf course with her parents but is fascinated with the FFA. She is home schooled, so the challenge was how to participate. She and her parents found a group of home schooled students who wanted to participate in the FFA. They formed their own chapter, and they meet every Friday for four hours.
It was an interesting discussion with Alicia. Since her chapter does not see each other every day at school, they are very intentional and focused when they get together on Fridays. They have efficient meetings and get a lot done. They also have an FFA advisor who is willing to facilitate this group, and that has brought it all together for them.
Alicia's interest in agriculture and the FFA has led her into her small business of farm sitting. She had no experience with livestock or farming when she began. However, her first customer saw raw skills and reliability in Alicia that she liked. So, she hired her, trained her and then allowed Alicia to watch her animals. Now Alicia has a reputation and skills that have turned into a business for her.

Donate to FFA - One way that FFA students are able to start small businesses is through an FFA grant of $1,000. In 2014, 141 FFA students received these grants. With your donations, more students can get this head start - pay it forward.
REASONS TO DONATE TO FFA:
Only 2% of Americans grow and raise most of the food and livestock consumed by the other 98% as well as the rest of the world. FFA is providing the needed education, training and resources to Americans that will carry that torch forward and insure that America continues to have inexpensive, quality food.
Rural Communities will rely on entrepreneurship in the future for population growth and job creation. The FFA is a major catalyst to that entrepreneurial growth.
Farmers, ranchers and those working in agriculture give the rest of America incredible amounts of freedom because the search for food is as simple as going to the grocery store:
"Because American farmers are able to provide for so many of us, they give more and more of us the freedom to pursue goals and livelihoods beyond growing the food we need to survive."
U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack
