SHOW NOTES:

INTRODUCING COLIN WEGNER!

I titled today’s episode, “changing from laborer to leader”.  The story of our guest today, Colin Wegner, made me think of that title.  Colin comes form a farming family in Minnesota.  His dad, uncles, cousins, etc. all farm.  Colin has always worked on the farm as well.

For many years Colin did the work that he was told to do, and he did it well.  But that was it, it was just work.  Colin was not really investing himself in the success of the farming operation.  In essence, he wasn’t “owning it”.

As time went on for Colin in the FFA something changed in him.  He realized how fortunate he was, and that if were going to work on his families farm he should do everything in his power to contribute to its success.  This is why Colin decided to major in agronomy at South Dakota State University.

During college Colin purposefully got the education he needed to make himself a better farmer, and to improve his families operation.  He has now graduated with his degree in agronomy and has returned to the farm to work full-time.

Armed with the fire and passion that Colin developed while he was in the FFA, this farm should be in his family for many generations to come!

Donate to FFA – One way that FFA students are able to start small businesses is through an FFA grant of $1,000.  In 2014, 141 FFA students received these grants.  With your donations, more students can get this head start – pay it forward.

REASONS TO DONATE TO FFA:

  • Only 2% of Americans grow and raise most of the food and livestock consumed by the other 98% as well as the rest of the world.  FFA is providing the needed education, training and resources to Americans that will carry that torch forward and insure that America continues to have inexpensive, quality food.
  • Rural Communities will rely on entrepreneurship in the future for population growth and job creation.  The FFA is a major catalyst to that entrepreneurial growth.
  • Farmers, ranchers and those working in agriculture give the rest of America incredible amounts of freedom because the search for food is as simple as going to the grocery store:

“Because American farmers are able to provide for so many of us, they give more and more of us the freedom to pursue goals and livelihoods beyond growing the food we need to survive.”

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack
