"When atheists point out the origin of a religion as a reason for disbelief, the religious like to call it the 'genetic fallacy'
and claim that the origin of a belief is not evidence that the belief isn't true. But that's not what's going on. The atheists are pointing out that the originators of a religion don't offer good reasons to believe it, so it's not a fallacy to withhold belief. The claim isn't that the ancient goat herders were wrong but just that there's no reason to agree with them. When scientists publish their findings, they also publish their work so that others can check it for accuracy. They do give reasons for belief."
