In this episode of Conversations, Lowy Institute Lead Economist Roland Rajah talks with Kyunghoon Kim and Ben Bland about Indonesia’s new sovereign wealth fund, the Indonesia Investment Authority (INA). They discuss Indonesia’s strategy in launching the fund, comparisons with Malaysia’s 1MDB corruption scandal, whether the INA can avoid a similar fate, and what it will take for the INA to fulfil its ambition of attracting many tens of billions of dollars in foreign investment to transform Indonesia’s investment landscape. Kyunghoon Kim is a researcher at the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy and an expert on industrial policy and state capitalism in Asia. He is also the author of a recent Lowy Institute research paperthatprovides the first detailed assessment of the INA and its prospects. Ben Bland is Director of the Asia-Pacific Programat Chatham House, a former Lowy Institute researcher, and the author of the first English-language political biography of current Indonesian president Joko Widodo.
