Description:

This week, Brian, Chris, and Nick take a look at Chris Smith's American Movie, a 1999 documentary that was championed by the late Roger Ebert and made its subject, Wisconsin-based aspiring filmmaker Mark Borchardt, something of a minor celebrity in his own right. The hosts have some differing opinions on Borchardt himself, but all three have given this documentary effort some serious thought, and the discussions it sparks cover everything from the responsibilities of a non-fiction filmmaker to the portrayal of real people as "characters" to how a film like American Movie gets off the ground in the first place. And, later on, there's even some discussion of Infinity War -- because, of course there is -- and it leads us to consider the state of "tentpole" movies in 2018, and whether (as James Cameron recently opined) the superhero blockbuster has finally run its course.
