In today’s world, the idea that a computer can listen to you read, and correct you in real time sounds strangely believable, but that’s exactly what the Reading Assistant program does. My guest today is Justine Lam, an Individual Differences and English as an Additional Language teacher at Presbyterian Ladies College, an independent school in Melbourne Australia. Now in her second year of using the program with her students, she’s seeing first hand the power of assisted reading and the gains that can be made, both academically and socially. Students not only learn to read better, but things like motivation and enthusiasm also increase. It’s not a replacement for teachers, or the human touch, but it is a compelling tool that can be used to enhance and increase the speed at which struggling readers make the necessary improvements. It’s also a way to scale up the number of children a single teacher can teach. In this episode, Justine shares her experiences with Reading Assistant.
