The conversation looked at the challenges facing teachers and government, but was balanced with some practical insight into what we can do to spark a language learning revolution in the UK. We finished talking about Hernando de Baeza, an interpreter who lived with the last emir of Granada in Spain. Hernando, although he died 500 years ago, embodied everything which being a speaker of a foreign language is about: knowledge, empathy and understanding.
