This year’s “Salem Reads” selection is a science-fiction novel, the first book by a woman writer. The focus of the plot switches back and forth, from the astronauts aboard a space vessel to a scientist on earth who finds himself the last person in an abandoned north-pole research station. What better tie-in than a speech by an award-winning glacier scientist? This week on The Forum, we’ll hear from Portland State University geology professor Dr. Andrew Fountain, a glacier expert who’s headed up research projects in Sweden and Alaska, and currently leads a study of glacier change in the western United States. |
