Hitchens was set to debate John Lennox just a year after the famed Dawkins vs. Lennox showdown in Birmingham, Alabama, and Larry – organizer of that event – interviewed both gentlemen in his hotel room the day before. Hitchens, with his reputation as a fire-breathing atheist, was the wild card. What would he be like? Larry prepared for a contentious encounter, but the two had an almost immediate rapport – the beginnings of an unlikely friendship.
