April 2008 I was in the middle of training for a marathon. I was doing a lot of cycling to supplement some of the running miles.
I started cycling with 15 minutes a couple times a week and progress to 45 minutes 3 to 4 times a week. the more I cycled, the better I became at running. I was loving it!
And then one day, after a cycling workout, I decided to do a strength training workout. I had been strength training all along, so wasn’t something out of the ordinary. I was doing a series of step-ups where you literally step up and down on a box.
On one of the times I stepped up, I heard my knee pop. Immediately I thought, This isn’t good. I tried to do two more step-ups and was unsuccessful at both attempts.
The next day I tried to resume my running/working out schedule as usual and was unable to. This went on for several days.
Not only was my knee not getting better, it was getting worse. I was in constant pain. I felt like the quad above my knee was on fire. On a scale of 1-10, it was 20.
