Description: [EPISODE] Seven Practices of a Mindful Leader This week, on The Conscious Consultant Hour, Sam welcomes CEO, Author, and Mindfulness Expert, Marc Lesser. Marc has been many things over the years — a dishwasher, baker, a start-up entrepreneur, and a CEO. Blending his leadership experience running a Zen monastery kitchen, leading mindfulness trainings for Google engineers, and starting and leading the Search Inside Yourself Leadership Institute, Marc combines the hard-earned wisdom of a compassionate mindfulness teacher with the insights of an experienced business leader. In recent years, mindfulness has exploded in popularity, but an individual’s interest in mindfulness does not necessarily translate into them becoming a mindful leader. Understanding mindfulness can be challenging; even more difficult is embodying and regularly practicing it in everyday life. Of course, ancient contemplative practices weren’t developed in order to improve business. They are meant to shift our consciousness and way of being in the world. Yet these practices are essential to mindful leadership and to creating the type of supportive organizational culture that allows business and people to thrive. Grounded in the depth and simplicity of his experience of leading a Zen monastery kitchen, Marc Lesser unpacks the richness of these practices and makes them accessible to our daily life. Marc and Sam will be discussing his new book, Seven Practices of a Mindful Leader: Lessons from Google and a Zen Monastery Kitchen. Tune in for this transformational discussion at TalkRadio.nyc or watch the Facebook Livestream by clicking here. Segment 1  Sam kicks off this episode with a quote from The Universe about how important it is to love each other. The next quote from Abraham touches on not being judgemental, having open mind, and appreciating the diversity of the world. Sam introduces mindfulness expert, Marc Lesser, who starts off by sharing a quote of his own. Marc talks about his start at a Zen Monastery in San Francisco, and his various responsibilities including baking and cooking.   Segment 2 Marc and Sam talk about Marc’s book, Seven Practices of a Mindful Leader, and what led to writing it. Marc talks about his start in business school and how he began his own greeting card company called “Brush Dance” in the dot.com boom. Marc tells Sam about working alongside Google engineers who wanted a mindfulness program within their company. Marc talks about his program, “Search Inside Yourself” which helped the engineers become better and more collaborative leaders, while helping to narrow down what the Seven Practices of mindfulness are.   Segment 3 Sam and Marc Lesser talk about the 7 practices. Marc Lesser said he learned a lot from his greeting cards company where he started coaching and consulting Google engineers. Marc worked with Google engineers and asked them questions like “what's most important in your life?” or “what really matters.” The Search Inside Yourself Leadership Institute was a meditation company founded outside of Google. Marc worked with the engineers for seven years in the nonprofit organization. In his new book, Marc discuss the 7 practices of being a mindful leader.   Segment 4 Sam and Marc discuss how to define mindless. Its through the lens of the 7 practices. The 7 practices are : Love the work, Do the work, Don't be an excerpt, Connect to pain, Connect to Pain of others and Keep making it simpler. The hardest practice for Marc was the last practice. In the end, this book was written for everyone. In the eyes of Marc Lesser everyone is a leader.
