Or at least the customer must have thought he was Spiderman. Either my friend is one lucky person, or that customer needs to work on self-awareness.
Which brings me to this episode. Self-awareness is vital for us to continue our learning journey as coaches. We need to know our strengths AND weaknesses. What we are capable of and good at AND what we need to improve for the sake of the journey and for our athletes. Like any profession, we should constantly be evolving. If professionals didn t evolve their craft, we d have a lot of lawsuits for malpractice. (Thank goodness my doctor didn t prescribe leeches or a good bloodletting to expel the evil spirits when I threw out my back! I definitely prefer stretching, massages, and a hot tub.)
This episode dives into the metaphysical and scientific concept of self awareness – what it really is, what hinders it, and how we can develop it. I drop some of my own personal theories (so DO NOT quote them as absolute truth) on the three coaching self-awareness stances: effective, affective, and extraneous. Being able to grasp the three allows us to begin to become more mindful, more aware of the internal and external operations of who we really are and the impact we make on our athletes, and therefore allows us to also be improving our coaching. I also show you some practical tips for teaching your athletes to be more self-aware.
It s a long one…so grab a soda, brew a coffee, or pour a bourbon, and enjoy the ride. I ll meet you at the gate of reason
Self-Awareness.
Research:
I read an amazing article by Tasha Eurich, PhD, in the Harvard Business review. Tasha is an organizational psychologist, researcher, and New York Times bestselling author. She is the principal of The Eurich Group, a boutique executive.

I also suggest studying Freud and Schiller, but I can t loan my undergrad books out as easily (besides, I am a margin note taker, and no one needs to the see the crazy ramblings of 19 year-old Coach Reed).
University of Washington has also done extensive research on mindfulness and self-awareness. In fact, they have an entire course on mindfulness! I want to take that course.
