Ivan Turgenev was more famous than Leo Tolstoy or Dostoyevsky during his lifetime, though now the roles seem largely reversed. Like Charles Dickens, Turgenev wrote about the injustices to poor people. This had a tendency to bring down on him the wrath of the Russian government, who harassed him incessantly. He finally got fed up with it all, and eventually fled Russian and settled down in Germany. Today’s story was first published in 1864, just a few months after Turgenev left Russia.

And now, Phantoms, by Ivan Turgenev.
