Sports has been around for millennia. Scripture even uses athletic analogies to make spiritual points (e.g. 1 Corinthians 9, Hebrews 12, 1 Timothy 4). The discipline, training, self-restraint, focus, and perseverance that sports demands provides fertile ground for the revealing and development of character.
And yet sports can be perilous. Motivations are often self-centered. The desire to win can be obsessive and the fear of losing paralyzing. Pride, anger, greed, and envy often reveal their ugly heads.
