In light of last week’s fatal shooting of Saheed Vassell by NYPD officers, DJ Jaffe, executive director of Mental Illness Policy Org, an adjunct fellow at the Manhattan Institute and author of Insane Consequences: How the Mental Health Industry Fails the Mentally Ill (Prometheus Books, 2017), and Michael Biasotti, former president of New York State Association of Chiefs of Police and the current head of its Untreated Severe Mental Illness committee, argue Kendra's Law is misunderstood and under-utilized and that in general, services for those suffering serious mental illness are lacking, leading to more, and more fraught, encounters with the police.
