It means accept, advance, arise, able to, armor, and even more significantly, "to lift, carry, or take".  It has to do with physical lifting, bearing burdens, worship, oath-taking, pastoral care, and of course, forgiveness and atonement. This puts a whole new light  around Matthew 11:28-30 - “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest..."
