Ep 5: We Are Not The Scapegoats (Editorial)

Description:

Independence Day is upon us! And while we are celebrating with friends, barbecues and fireworks, we should also be reminded of why we honor this holiday. American independence was hard fought, and the values they upheld we captured in written spirit through the Declaration of Independence. But do we still uphold those values, particularly when it comes to marginalized groups? In this episode of Translation, we look at how transgender people are still fighting a revolutionary war of sorts, particularly when we become easy targets. When a tragedy occurs that has nothing to do with trans people, why are we brought into the conversation at all?

The episode begins by taking a step back in time to look at the founding of America and the struggles they faced. There are similarities between the fight for independence and the transgender fight for equality today. We then look at why this is important now, particularly in how assumptions are made about transgender people, making it more difficult to have a voice in the public forum. Having still a small number of vocal allies doesn't make it easy, either. The crux of this episode comes from an article published last week, detailing comments made by a blogger who pointed to trans* people as one of the underlying factors for the Charleston shooting. But we are not the scapegoats, and we won't let this sort of misinformation go unchecked.

Thank you for your support and have a safe and fun Independence Day!

Trigger warning: This podcast contains discusses violence and transphobia.
