Description:

Everyone has a voice, and our voice is like a trademark. For transgender people, the voice is especially important. It could be the difference between passing and revealing to the world that they are trans. In today's episode, we talk about the voice, from its fascinating biology to how it affects the daily life of a transgender individual. Altering the physical helps a trans person see their true self in the mirror. But practicing their voice, that is how they can hear the sound of their heart.

The episode begins by looking at the biology of the vocal tract, including how the vocal folds turn air into coherent sound. We then look at how this affects transgender people, particularly those who choose to live in stealth. Having an unconvincing voice can be a giveaway. As such, there are risks for a transgender person altering their voice. This might include physical ailments to increased dysphoria or even violence. But there are solutions, which we look at next, including voice therapy or even surgery. We all have a unique voice, and we cannot be afraid to speak with pride.

Trigger warning: This podcast contains discussions of dysphoria, transphobia and violence.
