Stereotypes are everywhere. Especially in the modern age of the internet, stereotypes are widely pervasive. Whether a stereotype is based on a positive or a negative quality, it is dangerous. That is particularly true when it comes to the trans community. As trans individuals struggle to align themselves with traditional gender expressions, they are finding resistance, both from cisgender and other transgender individuals for not being stereotypical. This is particularly difficult for non-binary individuals.
In this episode, we look at the core definition of stereotypes, as well as the psychology behind it. We then look how it applies to the transgender community, namely with those who fall on the non-binary or genderqueer spectrum. We look at an example of someone who is challenging gender stereotypes in a positive and visible way. It isn't easy, and it will inevitably be met with a great amount of resistance. We discuss gender policing, namely why it is dangerous within the trans community itself. So long as we as a western culture are bound by the gender binary, gender policing and the application of stereotypes will continue. But we, any one of us, trans or not, can be the positive change.
Trigger warning: This podcast contains discussions of stereotypes, transphobia and gender policing, as well as references to violence and suicide.
