Indigenous Beginnings: The History of Aboriginal Cricket

Category: Sports & Recreation
Duration: 00:38:50
Publish Date: 2018-06-08 08:00:00
Description: 150 years ago, 13 Aboriginals became the first Australia team to tour overseas when they travelled to England. Author Greg de Moore tells the remarkable story of how the Aboriginal team was created - which he believes is the most important part of Australian cricket's history. To mark the anniversary, the best Aboriginal players from Australia are back in England this summer, to trace the steps of those pioneers in 1868. Hannah Darlington is one of them and she joins us at The Oval to discuss how indigenous cricket is developing Down Under. And ahead of their tour of South Africa, we hear from England bowler Katherine Brunt - who believes the number of county teams needs to be reduced if the women's game is to progress. Brunt also talks about her long-term struggle with a back injury. Photo: An Aboriginal team from Western Australia, 1879 (Getty Images)
