NEMA is an acronym for the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, which was formed in 1926 when the Associated Manufacturers of Electrical Supplies joined forces with the Electric Power Club to create an organization to set standards for the manufacture of safe and effective electrical products.

Back then, the market for electrical devices was exploding with growth because it was all so new, and this brought to light the need for manufacturing regulations that would turn out safer electrical products, and simplify the process, ensuring compatibility between devices.
