We've all heard about the Salem Witch Trials back in 1692, but it's not often that we can learn about one of the victims first hand on a more personal level. So tonight we get to meet Margaret Stevenson Scott, Victoria's 10x great grandmother. Margaret was one of the last victims accused and then sentenced to death for being a witch. She was 76 years old at the time and was executed on Gallows Hill on September 22, 1692. She was convicted on several counts including spectral evidence but was she really a witch? Did she get a fair trial, or was she perhaps the perfect candidates to highlight the court's effectiveness? They say that nearly 200 people were accused of witchcraft and jailed. Just 20 of them, including Margaret, would not confess to being a witch and they were the ones who were executed. |
