On this episode, we speak with Carlie Steiner, a good friend and skilled professional bartender. Carlie is graduated from the Culinary Institute of America, where she received a BPS in Culinary Arts Management. Following graduation, she launched her career right in her favorite city, Washington DC. She helped open Barmini by Jose Andres, where she fell in love with all things cocktail. Now, Carlie serves is the Co-Founder of Stir Bartending Co., a DC based bartending service providing signature cocktails, bottled cocktails, partial or full bars for events, tastings, and even workshops or classes. Alex and Jordan learn a ton from Carlie on this episode and we know you will too. Cheers!
What’s the first cocktail you remember really enjoying?
I don’t remember the first drink I really enjoyed. It could be anything. I do remember the first time I enjoyed a martini. That was life changing. Your first good martini is a game changer. It was an overwhelming experience for me
What do you like to make most at home?
I make very simple cocktails at home. Depends on whether I brought some one home or not though. If I’m entertaining, I’ll break out a proper old fashioned, boulevardia/ or a funky little sherry sour. My home bar is outstanding but if I’m alone and about to go out ive been known to drink a proper rum and Mexican coke or sip on a tequila or whisky
What would you suggest reading or watching to a new home bartender? What skills should they pick up?
Flavor Bible. Start from the beginning. Start from the basics. Learn what tastes good together.
What’s your favorite/least favorite cocktail(s)?
Honestly, none… if someone wants me to make them a vodka & soda, I’m going to make them the best vodka soda possible
What cocktail trend(s) do you love/hate?
I like the classics / low-spirit cocktails
I hate crazy infusions…
If you have one (or a few), what would say is your ‘signature drink’?
I make a negroni variation everywhere I go… I use a lot of sherry, amoros & digestives n my cocktails
Can you share with us one of your favorite toasts?
“I like to have a martini,
Two at the very most.
After three I’m under the table,
after four I’m under my host.” – Dorothy Parker
