Valentine’s Day. A holiday that, especially in recent years, has been stuck in a sort of go-between, with a romantic side for couples on one side, and “Single’s Awareness” on the other. But like a beautiful cocktail, we’ll look to it as a well-balanced day between those two extremes.
It’s that most beautiful of holidays–or worst, depending–with a rich history (or a dark history, if you prefer). The symbol for the day, the heart symbol, isn’t really based on a real heart (and could be based on women’s posteriors or other such theories). It’s not necessarily known as a drinker’s holiday, but it’s certainly a nice time for easing the tension of high hopes and just relaxing and having a good time with your sweetheart.
But alas, to the Valentine’s Day Cocktails:
Millionaire Cocktail
Alex uses this for this episode because that show “Who Wants To Marry A Millionaire?” made him laugh and cry as a teenager. And while there are loads of combinations for a Millionaire Cocktail, this one from Serious Eats is a great one. Love the absinthe/pastis complexity in this drink.
Honeymoon Cocktail
Like a more complex version of the Derby Cocktail, this drink is just breathlessly good.
- 2 ounces applejack
- 1/2 ounce Benedictine
- 1/2 ounce orange curacao
- 1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice
Shake ingredients together well and then pour into a chilled coupe. Garnish with a lemon peel for garnish.
Make Yourself Comfortable Cocktail
Combine all ingredients in a shaker, add ice, and shake well, double strain into a chilled coupe or cocktail glass.
Have A Heart Cocktail
- 1.50 ounces gin
- 0.75 ounce Swedish Punsch (A few brands available in the U.S., but you can make your own, too)
- 0.75 ounce fresh lime juice
- 0.25 ounce real pomegranate grenadine
Shake well in an iced cocktail shaker, strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a lime wedge
Green Eyes Make Me Weak Cocktail
- 2 oz. Bluecoat Gin
- 1 oz. Green Chartreuse
- 1/4 oz. Dolin Dry Vermouth
Combine ingredients in a mixing glass, add ice and stir (80 turns). Strain into a chilled coupe. Garnish with a lemon peel (optional).
I’m a Bit Old Fashioned
- 1 1/2 oz. Cardinal Spirits Lake House Spiced Rum
- 1 oz. Rittenhouse Rye
- 2 bar spoons demerara simple syrup
- 2-3 dashes of Angostura Bitters
- 1 dash Spicy Orange Bitters
Combine ingredients in a mixing glass, add ice, stir until chilled. Strain into a rocks glass over one large cube. Garnish with an orange peel.
Oyster Shooter
- 1 oyster
- 1 teaspoon Spicy Cocktail Sauce, recipe follows
- 1 teaspoon horseradish
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1 pinch black pepper
- 1 shot pepper vodka (Absolut Peppar; or make your own simple infusion)
- 2 dashes black peppercorn bitters (Alex makes them!)
Dinner for One
2 oz. of your favorite sipping whiskey poured into a chilled rocks glass
What are your favorite Valentine’s Day cocktails? Are you more sweet or bitter this year?
