In this episode Zede and Mallory divulge their feelings about fleece fabric. They both agree that fleece has a reputation for being easy to make projects with (as evident by the oodles of no-sew fleece blanket tutorials) but it’s qualities suggest otherwise. They explain that fleece is a manufactured material usually made from recycled plastics or acrylics and therefore has no weave (unstructured for sure)  making it easy to pull and distort its shape. In a nutshell it is in-fact not easy to sew or deal with, other than the fact its raw edges do not ravel or fray.

Zede also speaks of fleeces’ environmental impact referencing information from the Patagonia article, “What Do We Know About Tiny Plastic Fibers in the Ocean?” Patagonia is an environmentally concise clothing/outdoors company who puts their money were their mouth is to provide research and awareness to the pollution epidemic created by the manufacturing of fabrics/clothing. Patagonia has found that even though some fleeces are from recycled materials the fact is that these fabrics are so cheaply made the long plastic fibers will easily shed in the wash and infiltrate nearby bodies of waters like streams and rivers. The real tragedy is now local wildlife live and drink this water such as fish, and these fibers are not able to pass out of the fish and in turn many fish die or we (the people) end up eating them…gross and sad, right!?
