It should come as no surprise that there is finally a whole podcast episode dedicated to Zede’s favorite manta : There are those who test and those who wish they had. Zede and Mallory both agree that this is more of a life mantra versus a sewing specific one, but testing sure belongs in sewing.
Mal and Zede say testing can be as simple and important as just trying out your stitches before you apply them to your final project. It is also important to try and recreate the sewing situation for the final garment; like fabric, thread type, and where you are applying the stitching. Sewing a buttonhole on a denim waistband will not behave the same as sewing it on two pieces of quilting cotton.
On a larger scale testing can be making a muslin. A muslin in this case is not actually a fabric but the word used to describe a test garment. This can be a very important step in your garment making journey. Sewing is a lot less fun when you ruin your really special or expensive fabric, or make a whole garment that doesn’t fit. Insert muslin making here! Mal and Zede suggest making muslins to help get a better fit or idea of how a finished garment will look. Again use similar familiar to the end product for best results.
They also suggest that based on circumstances you may only need to muslin certain parts of a garment. Maybe you are worried a sleeve will be too snug on a jacket but the rest of the garment measurements are fine. Maybe you only need to make a test sleeve and shoulder. Or maybe you are sewing for another person and you really want to make sure everything fits well, maybe you do have to make the whole garment in muslin form. Muslins come in varying stages.
