Description: From Unprecedented to "Presidential", The Making of an Alternative Reality, "Teleprompter Trump" vs. "Twitter Trump", Life as a White House Reporter ** Hey I'm Brian Stelter next time for reliable sources this is our weekly look at the story behind the story of the media really works how the news gets made this hour from the joint address to those socking tweets from insider Jason Miller joins me talk about what makes his former boss +2 White House correspondents are here for the people inside of the press briefing at first the making of an alternative reality the real news headlines I've been hard on president from just read the New York Times and Washington Post CNN and other outlets been breaking new ground about team trumps connections to Russia one of the Washington Post stories calls Atty. Gen. Jeff sessions to recuse himself from Russia -related investigations Trump was reportedly ticked off about this even think sessions needed to recuse himself so what happened this weekend what trump try to change the story in fact he is and he and his allies I created a brand-new storyline casting aspersions on former Pres. Obama they haven't given any proof but they have given from supporters brand-new talking point that trumps problems are really Obama's fault trumps conservative media allies are working overtime to promote this narrative so let's take a look at what's really going on here and how it started this morning just in time for the Sunday morning shows trunk press secretary Sean Spicer said quote reports concerning potentially politically motivated investigations immediately ahead of the 2016 election are very troubling by reports the teaming trumps own tweets because early Saturday morning trip went on a reckless Tweet storm making allegations that are reminiscent of his birther conspiracy theory and his bogus claims about a rigged election he said quote how low has Pres. Obama gone to tap my phones during the very sacred election process this is Nixon/Watergate Obama's a bad or sick guy where did Trump get these ideas where is he getting his information CNN's Jeff Celli reports that this Breitbart news story was circulating in the West Wing on Friday and the truck was infuriated by now the story asserted that Obama has been trying to undermine trump at every turn as you can see from the headline it was inspired the Thursday night radio segment by conservative talk show host Mark event bear in mind this was not fresh reporting by living or Breitbart this was opinion attempts basically to connect some dots okay so that was on Thursday that's how this new story started now it's Sunday in the White House is calling on Congress to investigate this theory here's Sarah Huckabee Sanders on ABC's this week these are extremely serious charges the president is making where is he getting this information what I think there've been quite a few reports I know that Jonathan and others earlier in the program mentioned that it was all conservative media but that's frankly not true the New York Times BBC have also talked about and reported on the potential of this having had happened the times and other news outlets did not report but Obama personally ordered trumps phones to be tapped is no evidence of that reporters have described ongoing investigations the Trump Associates investigations that began when Obama was still in office soap Martha Raddatz asked was Breitbart the main source for Trump's tweets here's how Sanders responded I think the bigger thing is I you guys are always tying us to take the media seriously what we are today were taking the reports that places like the New York Times Fox News BBC multiple outlets have reported this weight the New York Times earlier this week from said the New York Times was evil and one of his aides recently called the BBC big news the family New York Times you and your colleagues have thrown into this trap of fake news for failing New York Times okay so keeping that in mind let's go back to what Sanders was saying on ABC all were saying is let's take a closer look if this happened Martha I agree with the president saying it did happen but I think he is going off of information that he's saying that is led him to believe that this is a very real potential and if it is this is the greatest overreach in the greatest abuse of power that I think we've ever seen in acute attack on democracy itself and the American people have a right to know if this Took Pl., Sanders is doing something the Trump ministration tends to do take the arguments in the allegations against Trump and turn them on somebody else try to do this flip-flop of sorts so we've seen this new story represented as new stories start on Thursday now it's Sunday give strong voters a new argument something new to debate open new to respond with what's the real story let's bring in Kathleen Hall Jamieson is a director of the Annenberg Public policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania in Washington Bill Plante of famous former White House correspondent for CBS News bill you covered Washington for more than half a century have you ever seen anything like this no previous administrations there was tension between White House reporters and the president of prison staff but never in this kind of situation where stories have been deliberately set up to take the place of whatever is actually happening and direct attention elsewhere so this is this is new but I think it's a very important we not allow ourselves to become involved in it personally that we simply follow it where it leads do you see the type of ministration taking that the words are being used against sin and turn them around for example Watergate course do you work on the reporters in Washington that covering Watergate Trump is using the word Watergate on twitter Reyna turned around and say Obama's acting like Nixon yes this is definitely what is trying to do is trying to shift the attention away from the concerns over his administration the ties with lessons with other concerns and move it to this new idea that he is put out there but all we can do I think is point out that is what the residents did there is no no proof that this is actually true there is no evidence that this has happened a very impressive interview by Raddatz morning over on ABC Kathleen how do you view this in the perspective of an effective event of a communication professor does Trump essentially break journalism by by saying something that's outlandish that has no evidence backing it up and then causing journalist report I like it's any other claim by any other president yes he does and he creates a dilemma for journalists because ordinarily journalist would say the president said then look for the alternative then look for the documentation and play through that narrative but when there's no proof journalist have to find a way in the headline to say without proof Trump alleges so that we don't put in place the allegation as if it has some legitimacy rather rather we should be saying where's the proof which I'm specializes in is shifting the burden of proof making a charge with no evidence and then asking for an investigation shifts the burden of proof now someone is supposed to disapprove an unproven allegation bar Journal is getting it right in the banners in the headlines in the framing or you seen a lot of scrubs some of them are doing well dear times this morning and print said with no proof this is the headline trump claims Obama tapped notice before you ever get to what Obama tapped and you lay down that as a possible charge you've heard with no proof and trunk claims I'd actually changed were claims to alleges suggests that it really has no support so far but your point that headlines makes the story not about what Trump is saying about insane and without evidence other words it makes it about either a misstatement or or sort of out of thin air statement is not backing up but is also a deeper narrative here because what was taking hold in the press was a story about cover up what were the Trump folks covering up notice what trump does he displaces that story with the allegation that no it's Obama who is Nixon and as a result anything that you're going to ally with the cover-up is innocent compared to the actual chart he's actually got associative logic here instead of a narrative of cover-up we now have a narrative of Nixon engaging in subterfuge to undermine his enemies that's a powerful historical analogue offered without any proof but there's some logic displacing one story with the other two because there's a lot more boarding we need to do on this topic that is a lot more we need to find out about what exactly the bomb initiation was doing who was being investigated bill as someone who covered Washington were to the White House for many years were CBS News you make of this dynamic between presentation on Spicer in the press as Maureen Spicer said when I can talk about this at all anymore until there's an investigation second hold up in the briefing room tomorrow no will come under sustained questioning tomorrow to offer evidence that there is something going on here and he will deflect that as he has in the past because so far they haven't been able to provide any evidence but again the important thing for reporters covering this is not to get involved personally in disputing this or disputing how we feel about the claim but simply to drive home that there is no evidence less than Evan somehow turns up and but this has to be continually investigated and discuss but not to get involved it sounds to me like you feel some journalists are taking this too personally getting too emotional is that is unfair yeah I see tweets from people and no names of course but whose who you are offended by what's going on well if you are offended by what's going on should keep it to yourself on those words on that no bill thank you very much for being here percent Linguistic around her and bring her back later this hour a quick break here more on this weekend came from Pres. Trump and the fact checking out another All-Star panel Welcome back to reliable sources on Brian Stelter this weekend was the president from trying to change the story of talking not about his own team's actions Russia but instead Pres. Obama whether Obama is a ministration improperly investigated trump let's talk about with our excellent panel Kathleen Venable editor and publisher of the nation magazine Molly Hemingway senior editor at the Federalist I and Charles blow columnist for the New York Times so much to discuss here let me start with you you see a weekend of reactions to present from suites how do you feel that the press is reacted this unusual situation well it seems that the press always react the same way which is very hysterically to every single thing that Trump says be little bit nice not that it's not frustrating to deal with a president who is so imprecise who says things without proof that is very frustrating at the same time I think this constant level of hysteria causes people to either tune out or get hysterical themselves and that's not a great public service there are real issues that flight we actually have had reporting month on surveillance of trunk transition people and good digging into that story about why we have people both surveying these people and leaking in sort of a coordinated campaign that is still a legitimate story even if Pres. Trump talks about it in a way that is less than ideal the way he uses language is different from the way the past presence of use language though a present from personalizes it says in a very shocking way maybe taking off all the edges are all the caveats is different and reporters are reacting to it I wonder Charles up if you feel you ever get a little hysterical as Molly was adjusting some journals do well I think you know we have to dispense with all euphemisms here about whether or not she's using your precision in language or not know the president is actually live and we have to continuously say that the president is actually lie and that is an assault on the truth itself and it is this assault on the legitimacy of the presidency itself and we will know that you have to remember is that when we stopped believing in the present we you know that is not just his credibility that's been burning through that's American credibility that is being burned through his credibility is inextricably linked to American credibility when he is the president and we cannot continue to grace him on some sort of curve we have to translate sift through true parts of what you say the positives that he thinks are you saying there absolute provable demonstrable lies and Windows 8 lies is a lie Holly is that what turns off some of your readers the Federalist federal a right-leaning website you say that lack of trust in media comes from well for example St. John's line well I think at the top of the show Brian you said that sessions recused himself in response to the Washington Post story on his testimony actually not true he recused himself according to him because of his involvement in the campaign he said that explicitly and clearly do I think you were lying no I don't I think it was imprecise I think you didn't leave and honestly me do you really believe that and he was in the campaign months ago he knew that months ago and the only one day after the Washington Post story suddenly decided to change his mind the question for journalists is just to report what was actually said during his testimony he only has enough job during report what they say during which everybody he also said that he would be going to Riverview and he would recuse himself at the advice of his staff he said that the meetings were set up prior you can't you can't know what's in people's heart you can only go by what they say is I think it's very much more devastating to say resident Trump said this here is what the facts say then to get into that sort of very emotional state of calling people a liar or whatnot again we have all sorts of liars throughout government coming copper was on the on the shows today talking about stuff this is a guy who lied before Congressman Sen. Wyden asked him if the NSA was spying on millions of Americans he said no that was it that was not true and he knew that was not true Eric Holder was held in contempt of Congress for lying about his involvement a gunrunning scheme that led to the murders of many people we didn't see the hysteria that we see right now over sessions or these other stories so it would be nice for the media to treat everybody with the same standards rather than just get so caught up I and I may get that Donald Trump sets people off one way or another but we have to keep hold of ourselves to the salon before tremendous amount of deflection actually did live and in fact we are certain we are reportedly exactly what he said in his own tweets she did not say that he was responding to reports which is what song starts on spices said after the fact she did not say that when he was tweeting he said Obama himself not the Obama administration not not Justice Department officials all beneath Obama that directions Obama himself had targeted him specifically wiretaps Toronto that is exactly what he said it is not hysteria not try to make that an emotional plea what everyone in journalism because what our business is is truth without that without credibility will think to sell there is no business personal journalism enterprise without truth we see that the truth itself was being attacked we must defend the truth from I take Molly's point in the same time though that the bar needs to be high for everybody we've a high standard for all parties and all politicians the audience hopefully will come along with her on the ride for us Katrina only bring you in on on something happened earlier in the week on the 40th day of the term presidency this joint address to Congress none of you are watching TV that night but here's what I saw on TV that night audible same truck was presidential/prison trip acting presidential praising the president's tall presidential trunk presidential tone change of tone fits the tone and it was a presentation and it was presidential presidential did commentators overreacted the actions of the bar too low have not a high enough standard for president from that night absolutely the hosannas to Pres. Trump being able to speak with a Teleprompter this is a president who is waged war on the media and the pivot of the media was quite externally to watch crime we have just put out a special issue with the nation how to cover media media in the trump era with a great doings very cover and its role is to say whatever your politics left writer center across the spectrum the media needs to do a better job of covering president Trenton it did candidate trump this is a president who hates to attack the very media which in many ways help fuel his win media malpractice played a role we need to find a way now to restore a blueprint integrity and independence and trust in the media and that means Brian doing our John you heard from Molly and Charles the role of the journalist should be to cover fearlessly fairly accurately and remind people why the media is called the fourth the state there's a role we play so I just think on the other news of the day if I could Brian you know Trump has debased our political sphere and discourse with trafficking and conspiracy theories his use of twitter should cover his tweet tweet/integrates and debases our work Journal should go out and do the work for example in his allegations house Kathleen Jamison said he shifting the burden of proof Charlotte should go out and report did the FISA court identifies a court give a warrant to top Trump or his associates he may traffic and conspiracy theories which are listening to do the digging the hard work that makes journalism about accountability he wants to destroy the infrastructure democracy and media information we cannot permit them so I think it's very important disagreement bill plan I think you need to jettison Olympia neutrality I think you also need to jettison Access for journalism and instead replace it with democratic accountability access is certainly less valuable if a person is and is leading you systematically access only go so far the person is in tone to the truth that there's also you you know you reported on this we have seen a tsunami of leaks in Washington there needs to be an independent investigation of Russian you know whether Russia colluded with in the same election we do not know at the moment we have unsubstantiated unverified allegations and it is vital for our democracy and for the entrance national interest of this country we learn about the leaks we learn through independent investigation about whether there were any ties because it's polluting our discourse we are resilient country we shouldn't be polluted by this ongoing idea anyone who questions whether Russia played a role in the selection is un-American I think some the reporting is happening to do your point Katrina limit company on one more point here Baha'i standards also for the press to the Associated Press under Curzon this weekend for publishing vice president Pentz and his wife's private email addresses Pentz wrote the APL letter as lawyer did actually write a letter asking for an apology JP is not apologizing but it says it took down the email address when I realize that Benson's wife was still using it actively is this the kind of story causes folks on the right some of your readers perhaps to have less trust however the AP I think it does but I think also just extend the challenge of our current media environment and we had so much coverage of WikiLeaks which was involving stolen information or hacked information we need to have some pretty clear ethics on how we how we report and who gets caught up in these leaks now it's one thing if you're a very public official and the information is a public interest not saying that excuses reporting on it but it's at least a different issue than when you're merely married or the child or something of a public official I think we should be very clear about what information gets shared and what we what we protect I don't see the need to publish the actual email address emails were news address was a news Carl's last thing that you and if I can ask about is I'm a ardent reader of all your twitter feeds I knows to Charles they need to rewrite your calm all the time now because so much news it happened so quickly on a personal basis how do you kind of keep up with all that's going on I have a weird grandma Monday, which is a weird guy because of right is of course there's a lot that happens between private very often start the rewrite but but but you know what the country is that it was very interesting to me was that we have to continue to report this in fact travel with on television this morning director of national intelligence and there was no Pfizer more order for wiretap so now you have to go back to this other point which is whether whether or not the president saying that Obama was behaving legally and relatively sensational charge and you can just like pushed it off into the other Kenneth mound of things that here tweeted that may or may not have been true that's an incredible chart one Pres. is saying about his predecessor that he had beheaded in a way that is so illegal that it it kind of adds up to something that is Watergate level I'm sorry this is this is so this is an enormous story there is no amount of credit sheet that we as Germans can bring to it that isn't too much you something has to happened this week we cannot have the present. Malcolm is a will blessed that Congress investigate in fact my my understanding of this near other people may know this better than me monitoring of this is that if the president actually wanted to know from the intelligence community she cannot she notice himself there is no need for the Congress investigate for him to know he may not disclose it but he could know it so this idea that that that this president has said this this can just be one of the other things at the same time I was making a point about Klapper's own credibility so folks to see it in different ways appreciate all of you being here thank you very much and up next year an exclusive one-on-one interview with former top advisor Jason Miller I welcome back take a look at this calendar we produce the after the election after he won the election day Donald Trump took to Twitter to attack release critique the media pretty frequently everyday with a green checkmark is a media critique you see much more the same in December never more than a few days off at a time before hammering to media outlets he didn't like January you see much of the same as one break there around Inauguration Day but then the green checkmarks mean more critiques of the press and much more the same there in February but notice here in March that's right about a week without an attack on the media from Pres. Trump's twitter account what's going on as part of a new strategy while doing me now talk about that is Jason Miller former Senior communication advisor Donald Trump's presidential campaign Jason great to see you Brent takes realm beyond back on Christmas day you decide not to take a role in the White House you were going to be medications director working alongside press secretary Sean Spicer why did you decide not to take the job will ultimately this wasn't my time I needed to make my family a priority apply to me in my decision but obviously still supporter the president to do anything I can to help out do think it's made Spicer's job harder and over while Spicer was being both communications director and Press Secretary he's had a hard time look this is a demanding position no matter who's filling the role I think Sean Stone very good job obviously about tough circumstances I think you see the particular of the past week or two shows really become more comfortable behind the podium it is really I think is good command of what the job entails and how to advocate for this administration you can stay in touch with Spicer and other aids right I will like catch up with folks every now and then in like a settlement still strong supporter of the administration and so I think sprinkler I think Spicer's channeling his boss that how that relationship going because is been all sorts of press stories some saying that Trump is very happy with spice or other sane supportive this again did you know I love that were on no reliable sources but in some of these cases I think you could call unreliable sources the fact of the matter with Pres. Trump is that if he doesn't want you there you're knocking to be there and I think that's a simple soak the truth of the matter is that the president thinks Sean is doing a very good job and I think she wants to get his performance behind the podium and the job he's done communicating the president's message is been very good lately just you and me talking when Pres. Trump wakes up and post a bunch of tweets about wiretapping at Trump Tower you're secretly happy secretly relieved you're not working at the White House well look like sent big supporter of the administration and I very much miss some of the action that goes with out but the one thing that I don't miss the hours that's when the things it really cuts and the ability to spend time with family and into other things be know what he thinks Brian would go back and secondly showed that the calendar yeah should the days which is something new going on there you think why thinkable things like number one the president gave it fantastic speech this week so I think that is we came away from Tuesday and I think the president saw what total messaging victory looks like it when he gets up there gives a speech like that there's no reason to go and step on it and for better part of 24 hours he had fantastic news coverage now the unfortunate part is that we started having these leaks in anonymous sources coming out the day later to attack the president that's really it was gonna put us in the last couple days here but this was a this is a very good week for the president and I think this this speech really shows how unifying force he can be that was an insightful, is that of those links were attacking the president and typically a journalist sitting here the anchors I would say those links were trying to inform a people maybe they were whistleblowers trying to inform us when on-site government but the truck team does view these leaks as a tack stone thing they are mean if the whole reason why these leaks were put out there was to try to step on the president's momentum coming out of the speech. Brian all think that you disagree with me on that point and I think that's my don't know I don't know what the sources were linking an interpersonal level I of my biggest frustrations is when I see criticism of the president saying that maybe he's not using a unifying enough tone about which office we saw Tuesday I think he does use it very unifying Tony brings people together but there he's constantly being faced with these attacks from these nameless faceless anonymous sources and expected to respond and defend himself if I think there's a real responsibility from the media is to wear word we draw the line on these these leaks in these attacks their coming out the president we can also then turn around and say that while I know the rough defending themselves but we have to take a different tone and I think that's I think that some of the media really has to take a close look at Will you pledge not to be an anonymous source yourself while I do my job and that's my job is said like career but also a strong supporter of the president and other communications professional so will do whatever I can to help out do you think is wise that do not be posting those tweets calling journalist the enemy the people in attacking so-called fake news is that a wise change in approach this week or would you recommend I continue to to avoid doing that benighted conversation with the president when he was still the president elect before I left the team and I went out to the private sector and he asked the question thinkers we get front page story that day talk about Twitter usage and so the question I frugally again be asked my opinion is Mr. Pres. or Mr. Pres. elect at that time tweeting not only does it remind people you have a authentic voice that your 22 people don't have to go through and check off on every single tweet that you're putting out there but also you have the single biggest megaphone if anyone on the planet and so if you need to set the record straight you want to get your positive message out there he's going right to the people there's a way of bypassing the entire media filter I think too frequently is put on message from anyone to leadership particularly the present United States while I'm glad you're not bypassing the media filter days and thanks for being a smart thank you Brian the next year or exhausting not being the press secretary or comms person but maybe covering going on a daily basis hear from two White House reports right after this
