Description: When you think of college do you often think about parties and booze? Several movies depict a supposed "typical" college setting, which may leave you wondering how anyone graduates with a solid degree of knowledge beyond cocktail and shot recipes. A new trend at some colleges and universities is the creation of collegiate recovery communities. Having a centralized place on campus where students can support one another is keeping students in recovery connected and providing hope that you can go back to school after treatment. Approximately 140 collegiate communities exist nationwide with more every year. The groups provide sober activities and sober support for all... you don't have to be in recovery to join the community, just interested in maintaining sobriety or having a good time without drugs or alcohol getting in the way. Just like getting a Business, Engineering or Nursing degree does not happen in 28, 60 or 90 days, neither does getting sober or finding recovery. Treatment is just the start of the journey. Continual after care for several years is necessary for the brain to shift gears and learn new patterns... and students are certainly not an exception. My guests on today's episode are Dr. Timothy Huckaby, a triple-board-certified physician, president of the Florida Society of Addiction Medicine and medical director of Orlando Recovery Center and Advanced Recovery Systems and Brett Watson, co-founder and activities coordinator at the University of Central Florida’s new Collegiate Recovery Community. They partnered to create this pioneering and innovative program at UCF which connects students trying to manage school and sobriety and points them to resources and social opportunities on campus. Let's go to the interview and learn more from this thought provoking conversation... Websites / Links: DrugRehab.com - http://www.drugrehab.com Earn your degree. I check in with innovative experts and individuals in the recovery industry, related fields or just “regular folks” who have had some incredible experiences so we can hear directly from them what is working today for addicts in recovery, for their families and their friends. I also want this to be a learning tool for professionals in the recovery field, a place where ideas can be nurtured and spread, where networking and education can help addiction treatment become more effective all the time. It's estimated that 53 million American's are touched by addiction. It is rare if you have not been personally affected by this disease. So, even if you are not the addict, maybe it's your son or daughter, or Mom or Dad, or sister, brother, cousin, uncle, aunt, co-worker, boss, neighbor, whoever. This disease is impacting you somehow, making your life a little less than what you would like it to be if you could wave a magic wand and create your dream world. I want these cutting edge ideas to be available to those who need help, those who often cannot afford to access the professional help they need. My mission here is to do so much good for the recovery community that I have a positive effect on addiction. I want to help hundreds, if not thousands of addicts (maybe millions someday) to be healthy, sober and free, really enjoying their life in sobriety. Thanks for listening! James Healy
