Plate meat pie
It's not gourmet, but a plate meat pie is inexpensive and tasty and just the food you look forward to - why you would buy a frozen one I don't know. This is a frugal midweek marvel.
Ingedients
2 chopped onions
500 g minced steak
Salt and pepper
Big Splash of Worcestershire Sauce
Beef Stock
400 g Plain Flour
100 g Lard
100 g Butter
1 level teaspoon salt
Water to mix
Fry the onion in the oil gently for 5 minutes
Add the steak and mix well
Add salt and pepper and the Worcestershire Sauce and cook until the meat changes colour
Add sufficient water/stock to cover the base and just peep through the meat
Thicken either with cornflour or gravy mix
Allow to cool completely
To make the pastry
Cube the fat and add to the sifted flour and a teaspoon of salt
Rub the fat in until you have crumbs
Add sufficient water to make a moist paste
Store covered in the fridge until required
Grease a baking tin or other container for baking - you could simply put a pastry lid on this, as in the photograph above
Roll out two thirds of the pastry for the base, then spoon the cold meat mixture into the base
Roll out the top and having moistened the edges, press together with flutes using the fingers or a fork
Bake in the oven at 190ºC, 375ºF, Gas 5 for 40 minutes, and the pastry should be very golden! |
