I am fascinated by the straight edge culture that emerged in the 1980's. But mostly because I don't know much about it! For those who have never heard of it, straight edge is a subculture of hardcore punk. Those who follow it refrain from alcohol, drugs, tobacco and interestingly some follow vegetarian or vegan diets. In this episode, I am so grateful to be able to sit down with Richie Hardcore. Growing up, Ritchie knew he didn't agree with mainstream culture and media. After finding his place and growing up with bands like Public Enemy, he came across straight edge. Here he found his calling and eventually changed his name to Richie Hardcore. After kick boxing professionally for 20 years, Richie has taken what he has learnt to the mainstream. Hosting a radio show, appearing on tv and committing his life to social change. Richie really cares and he has a lot to say.
In this episode we talk about:
- New Zealand's drug and alcohol culture
- What we can do to fix it
- His experience in the straight edge scene
- His life in kick boxing and what he learnt from it
- Embracing failure
- Why its important to embrace the journey
