Description:

The Sorenson's Test was used in this study.  It was found it could be used as a predictor of injury while deadlfting if the patient was not able to hold in isometric extension from the paraspinalis (lumbar and thoracic), glut max and hamstrings for more than 176 s.

While this tests more muscles than I named, it is a test we use as a screener.  Our modifications of lifts/ rehab if they fail include the test itself for longer time frames and barbell hip thrusters... to name a few.

While we can not load the patient safely in a deadlift, we can load them in a hip thruster.  So far we have had no patients injured at our office doing hip thrusters even with back pain.

The study is called "Which patients with low back pain can benefit from deadlifting."  It can be found in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning through the NSCA.
