Show 163 – Open Source perfSONAR Finds The Flaws Impacting The Flows

Description:

In this week’s show, we dive into the networking community ocean, and come up with Brian Tierney and Nick Buraglio for a discussion about perfSONAR. perfSONAR is an open-source package of network testing tools that can run in a mesh across diverse network infrastructure, and help determine why you’re not getting the network throughput on your network that you think you should be getting.

Running perfSONAR de-mystifies network performance issues like untuned host stacks, MTU size problems, underperforming firewalls, unbuffered switches, and similar kinds of challenges that are hard to track down without good tools. Part of the goal with perfSONAR is sharing performance data across multiple networks, so a community has sprung up around perfSONAR as users work together to pin down and resolve problems.

Joining Ethan Banks as host this week is Greg Ferro, although Brian & Nick do the majority of the talking as they describe what perfSONAR is, what it does, how to install it, and its effectiveness in solving real-world problems.
