SolarWinds’ Head Geek Leon Adato joins Packet Pushers co-hosts Ethan Banks and Greg Ferro for a discussion about the cost of (not) doing proper network monitoring. We also get an update on the new features found in the NPM 11.5 release.
What We Discuss
First up, the cost of (not) monitoring.
- What do we mean by cost?
- Cost of monitoring vs. not monitoring.
- Cost of not monitoring the right things.
Second, an update on new features in SolarWinds NPM 11.5. Leon was kind enough to contribute several notes on this for us.
- Wireless heat maps. NPM can now display where your wireless clients are on your heatmaps. When client location is enabled, NPM periodically polls the wireless infrastructure for client signal information. NPM then uses triangulation and other techniques to determine where that client is on your floor plan and displays it right in your NPM web console.
- Web-based alerting. More than just converting a server-based Win32 utility to web. This is a complete upgrade of functionality. New features include separating the “scope” of an alert from the “trigger,” alerting on multiple “spheres” of monitoring such as servers, limiting management of certain alerts to specific users or groups, and new alert actions.
- Auto-discovery of application types for Deep Packet Inspection. NPM 11.5 now auto-detects and compares to a list of 1200 profiles, and tells you what is being seen on the wire.
- Automatic dependency mapping. Using the existing CDP & LLDP information, NPM 11.5 now automatically builds parent-child relationships so that downstream events are suppressed when upstream devices are down.
- Integrated capacity planning. A new set of algorithms analyzes not just the rate of change, but also the pattern of change to predict when a resource (disk, bandwidth, etc) will reach capacity.
- Duplex mismatch detection. Utilizing topology information as well as a variety of interface counters, NPM will be able to detect both definite and possible mismatches.
