One of the frustrating elements of shopping for any technology is understanding how it is different. What makes one product distinct from another? I hesitate to use the word better or superior, because we here on Packet Pushers know very well that when doing product comparisons, which product is better corresponds tightly to it depends. What might make a product better in the eyes of one is no big deal or even a negative feature in the eyes of another.

With load balancers, aka application delivery controllers (ADC s), we decidedly have this challenge. At their root, load balancers all do the same thing. They offer a virtual address that load balances traffic to one or more real hosts, potentially doing some sort of fancy packet manipulation to get the job done.

From there, we start getting into details and distinctives that make the difference in a technology decision. On today s show, Citrix joins us as a sponsor to talk about what makes the Netscaler ADC platform different from others. This show is a follow up to show 230 that we published back in March 2015 that kicked up one of the longer comment strings we have had on PacketPushers.net. Rather, we opted to focus on some of the nuts and bolts of how NetScaler handles more interesting things like L7 packet manipulation, policy declaration, the use of promise theory, IPFIX extensions, that sort of thing.
