SD-WAN technology is creating new options for provisioning network and cloud services at branch and remote offices. Steve Woo, Co-founder & VP of Products and Parag Thakore, Director of Product Management, join the Packet Pushers to discuss the nuts and bolts of VeloCloud s cloud-delivered SD-WAN solution.
VeloCloud won the Best of Interop 2015 award in the startup category. This is VeloCloud s first appearance on Packet Pushers.
What s Discussed
It s not just about the hybrid WAN, but delivering applications over hybrid WAN with an SLA comparable to MPLS. This is important because many SD-WAN products claim to provide hybrid WAN (that is, bonding of Private/MPLS links with Internet links such as cable, DSL) but it s essential to ensure a comparable application experience across all the links.
Application performance over hybrid WAN is an important aspect of an SD-WAN solution. VeloCloud has measured application performance for over a year across multiple cities, multiple ISPs, and variety of Internet links, and found that 18% of the time, application performance is unacceptable. VeloCloud claims its SD-WAN performance is 99% reliable.

VeloCloud optimizes app performance via its patented Dynamic Multipath Optimization feature (DMPO). With DMPO, VeloCloud can steer the traffic across the links on a per-packet basis with built-in application-awareness. While many other SD-WAN solutions can do traffic steering by per flow basis and as on-prem solution only, VeloCloud can do all that and on a per-packet basis, with an option to do it on-prem or over the cloud.
VeloCloud offers its SD-WAN solution with a twist: a cloud-delivered SD-WAN. So what makes the SD-WAN solution cloud-delivered? VeloCloud and its provider partners have deployed a distributed multi-network of cloud service gateways to provide optimal connectivity to cloud and enterprise datacenters around the globe.
VeloCloud gateways provide direct access to SaaS and other cloud resources, eliminating the need to hair-pin through the datacenter. VeloCloud provides optimized and managed access to all cloud resources with its dual-ended gateway solution.
The VeloCloud solution is comprised of Edges, which are available in custom hardware or virtual form factor. The VeloCloud gateway network and VeloCloud orchestrator work in tandem to provide a true zero-touch deployment. The VeloCloud Edge can be deployed at a remote site, by a non-IT person such as a retail store sales associate, and without having to speak with the central IT staff or vice versa.
VeloCloud is the only SD-WAN vendor with a multi-tenant gateway network that integrates easily with the service provider s MPLS edge (PE) network.
VeloCloud is addressing the needs of SD-WAN for both enterprises and service providers. Service providers can deploy the branch edge (or virtual network function) as a virtual edge capable of deploying in a x86-server with VMware, Xen, or KVM hypervisors to address the needs of an universal CPE. You can selectively forward traffic to cloud datacenters with policy-based, application-aware forwarding.
In doing so, there is no need to jettison the existing routers in the branches. Keep the same router and simply deploy the integrated virtual edge, which VeloCloud demonstrated at the CiscoLive 2015 show. For additional services, you can take advantage of cloud-integrated solutions, such as security services from Zscaler.
In this podcast you’ll find out how VeloCloud s SD-WAN solution can benefit both enterprises and service providers. You ll also find out how to assure application performance over any Internet link, leverage the cloud gateways for direct access, and get flexible choices for the branch edge.
If you re an IT pro designing and managing the WAN infrastructure for your organization, you ll hear how VeloCloud SD-WAN can be deployed in your branches with centralized monitoring, management, and troubleshooting.

VeloCloud Product Summary
VeloCloud Edge: The VeloCloud Edges are zero-touch, enterprise-class appliances that provide secure optimized connectivity to private, public and hybrid applications, compute and virtualized services. VeloCloud Edges perform deep packet inspection (DPI) and application and packet steering. They provide performance metrics and end to end quality of service, in addition to hosting virtual network function (VNF) services.
VeloCloud Gateways: VeloCloud Cloud-Delivered SD-WAN incorporates a distributed network of service gateways deployed at top-tier cloud datacenters around the world, providing scalability, redundancy, and on-demand flexibility.
VeloCloud Gateways provide optimized data paths to all applications, branches, and datacenters along with the ability to deliver network services from the cloud.
VeloCloud Orchestrator: The VeloCloud Orchestrator provides centralized enterprise-wide installation, configuration, and real-time monitoring in addition to orchestrating the data flow through the cloud network. The VeloCloud Orchestrator enables one-click provisioning of virtual services in the branch, the cloud, or the enterprise datacenter.
