Show 293: The Open Networking Tsunami

Category: Technology
Duration: 00:00:00
Publish Date: 2016-06-17 11:53:51
Description:

The sheer volume of open networking projects has reached near comedic proportions. What started as a small group of projects devoted to software defined networking has grown into a plethora of platforms, a cornucopia of consortia, and a competition of conferences.

Which of these projects have real momentum behind them? Which ones can be safely ignored? And why do we have so many of them?

Joining us to share his insider perspective on what s really happening with open source networking is Carlos Cardenas. Carlos is a member of the technical staff at Cumulus Networks, but his primary focus is the Open Compute Project community.

He’s also a contributor to the Packet Pushers community blog, notable for his acerbic wit. You can follow him on Twitter here.

Among other subjects, we talk about why vendors are putting so much effort into open networking, whether project overlap might imperil certain projects, and the pros and cons of having vendors involved in open source efforts.
