The Packet Pushers talk with Jamie Wilson, senior network specialist at Live Nation UK, to talk about the networking involved in putting on live music festivals.

These festivals are immense events with thousands, or hundreds of thousands, of attendees, and the effort that goes into setting up the network is considerable.

Jamie discusses why the network is essential for a festival and talks about some of the services it provides, including Internet connectivity for musicians, press, and the business; livestreams of the concert; and video security.

He also shares some of the challenges that go into putting on a live festival, including how you build a network in an open field (literally a green field!) with a combination of a fiber backbone and wireless.

Other issues include spectrum congestion from thousands of smartphones, and responding to outages.

But it’s not all work–Jamie also talks about some of the fun that goes with being a music fan who gets to go behind the scenes.
