Show 305: A Eulogy For TRILL?

Category: Technology
Duration: 00:00:00

Description:

Just a few years ago, the IETF’s TRILL (Transparent Interconnection of Lots of Links) stirred up a good deal of excitement.

The Packet Pushers did several shows on TRILL and Ethernet fabrics back then, and we were pretty confident that the IETF’s standards effort was the way forward. It was going to be awesome!

And then…

Something happened. Was it SDN? Was it an implementation issue? A failed standards project? Or maybe Ethernet just didn’t matter any more. Whatever the reasons, TRILL just didn’t quite take off.

We’ll talk about what happened to TRILL and where the standards effort is today. Joining us for the discussion is Jon Hudson, futurist and principal engineer, and co-chair of the IETF TRILL working group.

Jon, Greg, and Ethan discuss how TRILL works and what problems it was meant to solve, standards implementation issues, how overlays sidestep some of those problems, TRILL’s relationship to SPB, and more.
