The Future of Networking series continues! We’re pleased to welcome back Geoff Huston, Chief Scientist at APNIC, which serves IP addresses for the Asia-Pacific region.
Geoff was our guest for Show 275, about the relevance (or lack thereof) of IPv6. That episode generated lots of discussion and debate, so we brought him back for another round.
We start with the Internet’s founding notion of universal reachability, and the positive and negative ramifications of that design that we’re still dealing with today, including middle boxes, unique addressing, security, and more.
From there we enter into a far-ranging and often contrarian conversation on a variety of topics, including content delivery and its impact on Internet transit, why we may not need IPv6, and why we should instead focus on the use of DNS and the routing of names instead of IP addresses.
