The Packet Pushers’ Future of Networking series continues with an interview with Bruce Davie, Ph.D., about SDN and the changes that are in store for data center networking.
Dr. Davie is CTO for VMware APJ. He came to VMware via that company’s acquisition of Nicira, a data center virtualization startup. Prior to Nicira, Davie had a long career at Cisco and became a Cisco Fellow. He also worked at Bell Communications.
Greg Ferro and Dr. Davie talk about the potential for significant changes to occur in networking. They discuss the benefits and drawbacks of a distributed controller, how networking is becoming more about software (including open-source software), the impact of disaggregation, and how fundamental shifts in the industry are being driven by distributed application architectures.
In this new world, the focus becomes getting capabilities deployed when and where you need them, as opposed to having capabilities tethered to a specific device.
