Show 379: Grappling With Promise Theory

Category: Technology
Duration: 00:00:00

Description:

Promise Theory is a way of modeling distributed systems (such as networks or information systems) based on the notion of individual agents within a system behaving only in ways that have promised to.

Mark Burgess, who developed the principles behind Promise Theory (and wrote a book about it), explains it like this in a Linux Journal article:

“Instead of trying to remote-control things with strings and levers, one makes use of an ecosystem of promised services that advertise intent and offer a basic level of certainty about how they will behave.”

Mark joins the Packet Pushers to explore the notion of Promise Theory as it relates to networks and other large-scale technology systems.

The founder of CFEngine and Emeritus Professor of Network and System Administration at Oslo University College, Mark is now an independent consultant.
