Behind Closed Doors, Ford, UPS, and Visa Push for Net Neutrality

Ad Hoc Telecom knows it s a little strange for offline giants to take an interest in Internet rules. Here s how the group explained that dynamic in a filing with the FCC back in July: Every retailer with an online catalogue, every manufacturer with online product specifications, every insurance company with online claims processing, every bank offering online account management, every company with a website every business in America interacting with its customers online is dependent upon an open Internet.

Introducing Data Center Fabric, The Next-Generation Facebook Data Center Network

To achieve this, we took a disaggregated approach: Instead of the large devices and clusters, we broke the network up into small identical units server pods and created uniform high-performance connectivity between all pods in the data center.

There is nothing particularly special about a pod it s just like a layer3 micro-cluster. The pod is not defined by any hard physical properties; it is simply a standard unit of network on our new fabric. Each pod is served by a set of four devices that we call fabric switches, maintaining the advantages of our current 3+1 four-post architecture for server rack TOR uplinks, and scalable beyond that if needed. Each TOR currently has 4 x 40G uplinks, providing 160G total bandwidth capacity for a rack of 10G-connected servers.

SDN to see widespread channel adoption in 2015: Brocade – ARN

Sixty per cent of Brocade resellers and distributors believe software-defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualisation will be a significant trend for all resellers within 24 months.

Amazon s Container Strategy Examined

Amazon s container service, however, will not run containers where they run best, natively on a bare-metal machine. It will run customers containerized workloads inside Amazon s version of a Xen virtual machine, so they ll lose some of the efficiencies associated with large-scale container use. Each virtual machine has its own operating system. Sans virtual machine, many containers are designed to run alongside each other under the host s operating system.

In contrast, Google s operations speed is based in part on running hundreds or thousands of containers together, natively on bare-metal servers with no virtual machine layer. But that s strictly for its own systems. When it comes to running customers containerized workloads, Google App Engine runs them inside a virtual machine, using the KVM hypervisor. The virtual machine provides a necessary boundary from the next customer s containerized workload.

Cisco Project Squared

Close copy of tools like Slack or Hipchat but with user interface that tries way to hard at being cool and hip. Cluttered with icons and I found that many pages simply didn t work.

  • Integration with Box but not Dropbox might make it more appealing for enterprises for file sharing.
  • Advanced features only work in Firefox, not in chrome or safari
  • Couldn t download the MAC client on Chrome
  • When I click the back button it keeps doing the login over and over

Stop Selling Storage Storagebod

But when I look round the room in a normal sales presentation/briefing; it is not uncommon for the vendor to have four or five people present, often outnumbering the number of customers in the room; account salesman, product salesman, account technical specialist, product technical specialist and probably a couple of hangers-on. A huge cost to the vendor and hence to me as a customer.

Less Sales, Simpler Products, Easier Buying – EtherealMind

The cost to the customer in terms of consulting costs plus their own internal resource (engineers and PMs in meetings) was more than half of the final quotation (low six figures) and the project manager has now raised the issue with the CIO.
