Docker Boosts Networking Capabilities w/ New Release

Docker Plugs Containers Into SDN

With the new release, Docker will come pre-loaded with microsegmentation and network policy capabilities, which will allow developers to connect containers to virtual networks across any number of machines. The new capabilities also include a container-level DNS interface that will give containers network visibility to each other even as they move across hosts.

SocketPlane’s approach creates a virtual network by using Open vSwitch, a software switch that can be embedded in a virtual machine or container, to build Virtual Extension LAN or VXLAN tunnels. The IETF has approved VXLAN as a standard. It was created by VMware, Arista, and Cisco in 2013. The tunnels are logical units of existing IP networks and can be used to connect containers. Each container gets an IP address that stays with the container regardless of where it migrates.

Docker, CoreOS, Google, Microsoft, Amazon And Others Agree To Develop Common Container Standard

Under Linux Foundation, will launch Open Container Project, with Docker container format as the basis of the new standard

The main idea here is that developers should be able to package their applications in a container and be confident that it will run in any runtime, whether that s Docker, CoreOS s rkt, or projects like Kurma or Jetpack. That standard should be vendor neutral and development should happen out in the open.
