Network Break 50: InfoSec Arguments & Anti-Censorship Routing

Category: Technology
Duration: 00:00:00
Publish Date: 2015-08-25 09:44:04
Description:

It’s our 50th episode of Network Break! For some reason listeners keep showing up, so we’ll keep doing this. Today’s episode covers elastic pricing from Big Switch Networks, and looks at a proposed new anti-censorship routing method that lets you avoid specific geographical regions.

We also discuss how Target gets off cheap in its $67 million payout to Visa, and speculate how the insurance industry could affect information security professionals. There’s also a side argument about the professionalism of the infosec industry.

The opining continues with a conversation about the potential impact of patents on the burgeoning SD-WAN market, and we learn Greg’s grocery-store theory of IT vendors and partner ecosystems.

For the same CapEx amount used to purchase the SDN fabric — physical switches, software and support — customers can elect to receive twice the capacity with an “Elastic SDN Fabric” at no additional cost. For example, for the price of a 4 rack configuration, Big Switch would ship 8 racks of SDN fabric. The excess capacity of Elastic SDN Fabric is consumed on an as-utilized basis at $599/switch/month.

Alibi Routing Targets Censorship

New Internet Routing Method Allows Users to Avoid Sending Data Through Undesired Geographic Regions – University of Maryland

Alibi Routing works by searching a peer-to-peer network to locate peers other users running the alibi routing software that can relay a user s packets to its ultimate destination while avoiding specified forbidden regions. The peer is called an alibi. The alibi provides proof calculations that exploit the fact that information cannot travel faster than the speed of light that at a particular time, a packet was at a specific geographic location sufficiently far enough away from the forbidden areas that the data could not have entered them.
